Water for Everyone! Construction of the El Cuchillo II Aqueduct
At GP Construcción, we are building the infrastructure for the “El Cuchillo II” Aqueduct, a massive water project that benefits more than five million residents of the state of Nuevo León. This project is more than just an immediate solution for the present; it is the future for families in Monterrey.
What is the El Cuchillo II Aqueduct made of?
In partnership with the Government of Nuevo León and the Monterrey Water and Drainage Services, we built the El Cuchillo II aqueduct, which is 104 kilometers long and has a diameter of 2.13 meters, starting in China, Nuevo León.
The aqueduct will supply more than 5,000 cubic meters of water per second to serve the Monterrey metropolitan area, and it has an estimated service life of 50 years.
The water supply begins at Pumping Station 0 (PB0) and extends to the San Roque Water Treatment Plant in Juárez, which is located 22 meters underground; the first 5 meters are covered by a reinforced concrete slab.
The aqueduct consists of submersion tanks, oscillating tanks, and air chambers—components that enable staged pumping and ensure the pipeline's proper operation.
The pumping system consists of five stations located 20 to 25 kilometers apart. Each station has six pumps; five of them transport water from the El Cuchillo Dam to the San Roque Water Treatment Plant. The remaining pump serves as a backup in case one of the others fails.
At GP Construcción, we handled the detailed engineering, the construction drawings, and the construction of the five pumping stations and their air chambers.
The inauguration was presided over by the President of the Republic, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, along with the governor of Nuevo León, Samuel García Sepúlveda, last December.
