FBO Hangar at Los Cabos International Airport: Engineering That Raises the Bar for Airport Infrastructure in Mexico

As leaders in airport infrastructure in Mexico, GP Construcción developed the FBO Hangar at Los Cabos International Airport, a project requiring a high degree of technical precision carried out for Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP), a Mexican company that manages, operates, and develops airports in Mexico and abroad.

Located in San José del Cabo, Baja California Sur, this project—spanning more than 6,500 m² —represents a new milestone in the airport’s infrastructure, as it is the first hangar dedicated to general aviation at this terminal, designed to provide specialized aircraft storage and maintenance services.

A High-Precision Project in an Operational Area

The main challenge was to carry out the construction work without disrupting the general aviation platform's operations.

Construction took place in the Air Operations Area, in front of the aircraft parking bays, which required ongoing coordination with the Operational Control Center and meticulous planning involving all parties: GAP’s internal and external contractors, as well as the Operations, Operational Safety, and Property Security departments.

In this way, GP Construcción was able to maintain the airport’s safety and operational functionality while the construction work was underway, further solidifying its expertise in projects within active airport environments.

Engineering and Innovative Construction Systems

The FBO Hangar stands out for its use of the IntraSpace II three-dimensional modular steel structure system, which is used in both the walls and the roof.
This system, consisting of spherical nodes and galvanized steel tubular profiles, allows for larger clear spans without intermediate columns, ensuring high structural resistance to wind and earthquakes, and optimizing construction time thanks to its fully bolted system, which requires no welding or specialized labor.

With a clear height of 95.10 meters, the hangar offers a spacious, functional, and efficient space, ideal for the business aviation and specialized service operations required by Los Cabos International Airport.

Scope of the Project

The comprehensive development included:

• Detailed design.
• Earthwork and Foundations.
• IntraSpace II Modular Metal Structure.
• Enclosure and metal cover.
• Perimeter wall.
• Interior and exterior floors made of metal-fiber-reinforced concrete.
• Sliding door system for a hangar.
• Electrical, plumbing, storm drainage, and sanitary systems.

Benefits for Airport Operations

The FBO Hangar has become a new strategic asset for the Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico, offering a specialized space for the storage and maintenance of aircraft, protecting them from the region’s weather conditions and expanding the range of general aviation services.

This project was carried out in parallel with the expansion of Terminal 2 at Los Cabos International Airport, which was also led by GP Construcción.
